Summary

  • Promotes the InnerSource Hackathon pattern from Level 1 (Initial) to Level 2 (Structured), making it eligible for publication in the InnerSource Patterns book.
  • Adds The Aerospace Corporation as a second Known Instance, based on their InnerSource contribfest presented at the InnerSource Commons Summit 2024 by Tren Baumgarten and Caroline Jones.
  • Enriches the Solution section with concrete, experience-based guidance on preparation (funding, awareness, task curation, task boards, access management), participation categories, and event format (introduction, work session, closing, follow-up).
  • Adds a Related Patterns section linking to Start as an Experiment, Praise Participants, InnerSource Portal, Dedicated Community Leader, and Gig Marketplace.
  • Adds the pattern to the InnerSource Program Mind Map under Begin > Program Setup.
  • Adds context about contract-based organizations to the Context section, drawn from the Aerospace Corporation's experience.

Level 2 Requirements Checklist

  • Validated by at least 1 known instance (has 2: IKEA and The Aerospace Corporation)
  • Uses the format described in the Pattern Template
  • Follows the Pattern Style Guide
  • Title is memorable, concise, and descriptive
  • Links to related patterns of this level or higher
  • Links to outside resources reference trusted resources
  • Added to at least one phase of the InnerSource Program Mind Map
  • Spelling & Style checks pass (to be verified by CI)
  • Markdownlint checks pass (to be verified by CI)

Notes

The Aerospace Corporation's experience is a strong validation of this pattern. They are an FFRDC (Federally Funded Research and Development Center) where developers charge time to government contracts — a context where InnerSource adoption is especially challenging because work not embedded in funded tasking simply doesn't happen. Their contribfest demonstrated that securing dedicated funding for even a single day can overcome this barrier, with measurable results:

  • 31 participants across 21 departments
  • 15 tickets closed during/shortly after the event
  • 2/3 of participants had never heard of InnerSource beforehand
  • 100% of survey respondents agreed InnerSource would positively impact development
  • Documentation site traffic nearly doubled in the following month
